PLOWHAUS ARTISTS’ COOPERATIVE & SUNTRUST BANK PRESENT:
“EAST OF CENTER”
A BENEFIT FOR EAST ACADEMY
Saturday, May 20th from 10am until 2pm
reception showcasing the artwork of East Academy Students,
created under the direction of Plowhaus artists.

“East
of Center",
while
obviously
play on
words with
the
school’s
name and
location,
also
represents
the
uniqueness
of East
Academy’s
approach to
learning and
its student
body. EA
reflects the
cultural,
social and
economic
diversity of
the East
Nashville
community
itself. The
Plowhaus, an
artist run,
community
supported
gallery
dedicated to
encouraging
the
investigation
of
art-making
and the
support of
emerging
artists, has
chosen East
Academy as
one of their
many
community
organizations
to invest
in. Franne
Lee, the
executive
director for
the Plowhaus
states,
“By
working with
the children
in our
community we
hope to open
their eyes
to the arts,
so when they
grow up they
will
continue to
discover and
support the
arts and
possibly
become
artists
themselves.”
The family
fun event
will feature
the East
Academy
chorus, a
noon time
performance
by Improv
Nashville
comedy
troupe,
children’s
watercolor
activities,
snacks for
both
children and
adults and
the
opportunity
to view and
purchase
beautiful
artwork. Funds
raised will
go to
support the
fine arts
program at
East
Academy.
The arts
play a vital
role in the
EA
curriculum;
students of
every
background
are familiar
with the
Frist
Center, TPAC
and the
Nashville
Children’s
Theater. The
school’s
“multiple
intelligences"
educational
approach
includes
many
different
types of
learning,
including
kinesthetic
(through
movement and
performance),
visual and
spatial
(through art
and hands-on
manipulation). Visiting
Plowhaus
artists have
exposed
students to
new mediums
like
leather,
fabric and
printmaking,
and
introduced
children to
the idea of
art as a
future
career.
During the
show, the
work of the
student
artists will
be displayed
at
children’s
eye level to
enhance
their first
gallery
experience.
This event
would not be
possible
without the
generous
support of
our
sponsors:
SunTrust
Bank, 5th
& Main,
Beth Haley
Design and
Improv
Nashville.
